US Military Assistance to Israel in Response to Hamas Attack In the aftermath of the devastating Hamas attack on Israel, President Joe Biden wasted no time in reaffirming the United States’ unwavering support for its closest Middle East ally. The US response to this crisis has included the provision of Naval, Air, and ammunition support.
Each year, the United States extends approximately $3 billion in military aid to Israel. To underscore its commitment following Saturday’s attack by the Palestinian armed group, the US has implemented several significant measures.
Naval Support:The USS Gerald R Ford Carrier Strike Group, among the most advanced aircraft carriers in the US Navy and globally, is being strategically repositioned in the Eastern Mediterranean. Accompanied by its associated warships, this group includes a guided missile cruiser and four guided missile destroyers. In addition to this, the US is sending the USS Normandy, another guided missile cruiser equipped with naval guns, along with destroyers USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney, and USS Roosevelt.
Aircraft Augmentation:The US is bolstering its Air Force presence in the region by deploying the F-35, regarded as the world’s most advanced fighter jet. This deployment is complemented by F-15, F-16, and A-10 fighter aircraft squadrons.
Munitions Supply: US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has confirmed the supply of munitions to Israel. While the specific types of munitions haven’t been publicly disclosed, it is widely believed that Israel has requested interceptors and precision-guided munitions. Intercept missiles are crucial components of Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, designed to intercept and neutralize Hamas rockets. Reports suggest that around $2 billion worth of US munitions have been pre-positioned at six locations in Israel for potential use in emergencies.
Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance since World War II, emphasizing the substantial nature of the United States’ military support.
Hamas has strongly criticized the US decision to provide aid to Israel, characterizing it as “aggression” against Palestinians. The group contends that such support amounts to participating in aggression against the Palestinian people. These developments underscore the intricacies and sensitivities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
