In a heartbreaking turn of events, a birthday celebration at a Spanish nightclub took a tragic turn, resulting in the loss of over a dozen lives.

The Inferno at “Teatre” Nightclub

Early on a Sunday morning, a horrifying fire engulfed the “Teatre” nightclub, also known as “Fonda Milagros,” a two-story establishment in Spain. At approximately 6:00 am local time, firefighters received the initial distress call and promptly raced to the scene.

The Desperate Battle

The first responders faced a challenging situation. Thick smoke billowed from the nightclub’s roof, hindering their access. It wasn’t until 0800 GMT that they could finally enter the premises. Tragically, they discovered four lifeless bodies. Approximately forty minutes later, two more victims were found, raising the grim death toll to seven.

Eyewitness Accounts

Survivors recounted their harrowing experiences, with one individual sharing, “I think we left 30 seconds to 1 minute before the alarms went off and all the lights went out, and the screams saying there was a fire.” The survivor, who chose to remain anonymous, also mentioned that five family members and two friends were still unaccounted for.

Investigation and Challenges

Diego Seral, a spokesperson for Spain’s National Police, revealed that most of the fire damage was concentrated in the Fonda nightclub, one of three interconnected clubs. The collapse of its roof complicated the search for victims and pinpointing the fire’s origin.

Ongoing Concerns

As thick smoke continued to pour from the nightclub’s roof, images captured by emergency services depicted firefighters battling the blaze. Authorities raised concerns about the whereabouts of all attendees, as not everyone had been located at the time of the report, potentially leading to more victims.

Origins of the Fire

Diego Seral, the national police spokesperson, indicated that the fire likely started on the nightclub’s first floor. In addition to the tragic loss of life, four individuals sustained injuries in the inferno. Two women, aged 22 and 25, along with two men in their forties, suffered from smoke inhalation and received medical treatment.

A City in Mourning

Jose Ballesta, the mayor of Murcia, declared three days of mourning for the city. He expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to all those affected. Over 40 firefighters and 12 emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene to combat the fire and manage its aftermath.

In this moment of profound loss, our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
