Italy’s PM Georgia Meloni has indicated to China’s Prime Minister Li Qiang to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative.

Italy has indicated to China that it may withdraw from China’s ambitious project Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni personally gave this information to Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday, September 9. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the G20 meeting. Italy signed an agreement with China in 2019.

The G20 summit held in India was historic in many ways. The Delhi Declaration of the Summit was issued on 10 September with the consent of all the countries. At the same time, it was agreed to build an economic corridor between India, Europe and the Middle East i.e. Gulf countries.

The India-Europe-Middle East Economic Corridor deal is being considered a response to China’s two projects. These are the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor or CPEC. In a sense, CPEC is considered a part of BRI.

According to Bloomberg report, Italian PM Meloni has asked for time to announce China’s decision to withdraw from the BRI project. They are also worried that this may affect business.

Bloomberg had reported in early 2023 that Italy could withdraw itself from the BRI project. Meloni remained in this dilemma for several months as to how to convey her decision to the Chinese government.

China has threatened Italy
Meloni has said that in the coming months she will go to China and talk on sensitive issues. At the same time, China’s Ambassador to Italy had warned that if Italy stays out of the BRI agreement, it will have to face consequences.
