“YouTube’s AI-Generated ‘Dream Tracks’ with Artist Approval”

YouTube has introduced a feature enabling creators to produce AI-generated music reminiscent of prominent pop artists, such as Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, and others, with the artists’ explicit permission. Referred to as “Dream Tracks” for Shorts, creators can input song concepts and choose an artist, with AI subsequently incorporating their voice into the track. This development is in line with Google’s Music AI Incubator initiative and YouTube’s commitment to responsible AI usage, exemplified by the recent mandate for creators to disclose the use of generative AI.

The platform’s move towards AI-generated music is not entirely surprising, given Google’s earlier announcement of its Music AI Incubator collaboration with Universal Music Group and the licensing of artists’ voices for AI-generated music projects on YouTube. This announcement coincided with the release of YouTube’s AI music principles, emphasizing responsible integration with music partners.

The decision to confine this feature specifically to Shorts appears strategic, especially considering other platforms like Spotify are actively removing thousands of AI-generated songs. Universal Music Group had previously advocated for streaming services to take a firm stance against AI-generated music due to copyright concerns.

Interestingly, this news follows YouTube’s recent announcement that it will soon require creators to label videos created with generative AI. Non-compliance may result in fines, content removal, or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program. Crucially, artists will have the authority to request the removal of deepfaked content and AI-generated music that has been uploaded without their consent.

In addition to unveiling the Dream Tracks feature, YouTube disclosed ongoing collaboration on a set of music AI tools through its Music AI Incubator. These tools, set for testing later in the year, aim to facilitate the seamless transformation of thoughts and ideas into music. The platform envisions possibilities such as creating a new guitar riff by humming or imparting a reggaeton feel to a pop track.
