Meta Unveils Plans for 2024 Global Elections

Meta, the tech giant, has outlined its strategy for political advertising during the 2024 elections, anticipating crucial votes in major democracies such as the United States, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the European Union.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, disclosed the company’s approach, largely aligning with past practices. Notably, Meta intends to halt the acceptance of new political ads one week before the U.S. elections in November 2024. Clegg emphasized Meta’s commitment, citing a $20 billion investment in safety and security for global elections since 2016, asserting, “No tech company surpasses Meta in efforts and investments to safeguard online elections, not only during election periods but consistently.”

Meta also highlighted its efforts in combating interference operations and harassment, claiming the identification of over 700 hate groups globally, including 400 white supremacist organizations.

A notable shift pertains to consumer-generated AI content. Meta recently declared that political advertisers must disclose AI-generated content shared on Facebook and Instagram. This encompasses digitally created or altered images, footage, or audio depicting events or entities that did not authentically occur or exist. Meta’s policy extends globally and encompasses social issues, electoral matters, and political advertisements.

Political advertising on Meta’s platforms has faced persistent controversy. Past elections witnessed Meta accused of disseminating misinformation and inadequately blocking such content, challenging its self-proclaimed commitment to safeguarding online elections. Allegations include preferential pricing for certain parties, exemplified by accusations against India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2020, the U.S. Federal Election Commissioner criticized Facebook for its impact on democracy through the acceptance of political ads, stating, “The company underestimates the gravity of its impact on democracy.”
