Thumbs Up emoji: The way of communication is changing day by day in the digital age. Today, instead of sending messages, people communicate with others through emojis and GIFs. We use the thumbs-up emoji a lot on all social media apps. Usually we all use it when we agree with something. Today we are going to tell you a news in which sending a thumbs-up reaction became expensive for a person and he had to pay a fine of over 50 lakhs. Read what’s up

what is the case

A Canadian court judge has deemed the thumbs-up emoji as a signature and has ordered a man to pay a fine of Rs 50 lakh. The Court of King’s Bench in Saskatchewan, Canada recently heard a case related to a grain buyer at Southwest Terminal, in which the bench gave this verdict. What actually happened was that a grain buyer sent a message to a farmer in March 2021, in which the buyer wrote that the company was interested in buying 86 tons of flax at $12.73 per bushel.

Kent Mickleborough, a grain buyer, contacted a farmer named Chris Actor by phone and sent him a message on the phone to respond to the contract. To this the farmer reacted with a thumbs-up emoji. When it came time to deliver, the farmer did not deliver the jute and then the price went up. After this both started fighting with each other. Kent said Chris replied to the message, which means the deal was done. But the farmer said he just wanted to say via emoji that the contract had been secured.

The court gave this verdict

Judge Keen, while ruling in the case, imposed a fine of $61,641, i.e. more than 50 lakh rupees, on the farmer. The judge used the definition of emoji from Dictionary.com to support his decision. According to Dictionary.com, emoji are used in digital communication to express explanation, approval, or encouragement. Justice Keane admitted that this definition may not be official but the emoji fit his understanding and so he fined the farmer 50 lakhs for non-fulfilment of the contract.
