JBL Charge 5 Review: Unveiling the Pinnacle of Outdoor Bluetooth Speakers

Are you in search of a waterproof portable Bluetooth speaker that can endure the rigors of outdoor adventures? The JBL Charge 5 might catch your eye. Renowned for its robust design, this IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof speaker boasts an impressive 20-hour battery life and features a built-in power bank for charging devices while enjoying music – a game-changing feature for extended outdoor excursions. the JBL Charge 5 does lean towards the higher end of outdoor-friendly portable speakers. If you’re contemplating the splurge, let’s delve into whether it’s worth your investment.

The Aesthetically Pleasing JBL Charge 5

For those familiar with the JBL Charge series, the Charge 5 introduces a fresh look. As a previous owner of the JBL Charge 3, I welcomed the opportunity to put the upgraded Charge 5 to the test. Right out of the box, the Charge 5 showcases a sleek and luxurious appearance, exuding a premium feel that transcends its $180 price point.

While maintaining a similar size to the Charge 3, the Charge 5 comes with notable design enhancements. The larger logo positioned prominently in the middle, an updated battery indicator, and sleek non-slip rubber feet along the bottom contribute to its refined aesthetic. The Charge 5’s rubber bumpers at both ends offer a smooth, yet sturdy, tactile experience, providing an overall improved feel compared to its predecessor.

Sonorous Acoustics of the JBL Charge 5

Following a few hours of charging via the included USB-C cable, my eagerness to test the audio quality of the JBL Charge 5 was met with sheer satisfaction. The sound quality is impressive – rich, dynamic, and surprisingly clear, accompanied by a well-balanced bass that permeates the room without overpowering other audio elements. The inclusion of an optimized long-excursion driver, a separate tweeter, and dual JBL bass radiators translates to a discernibly enhanced audio experience. Additionally, the JBL Connect companion app offers a basic equalizer, allowing users to customize their audio experience, a notable improvement over the Charge 3.

Charge 5 vs. Charge 3: A Clear Winner Emerges

A side-by-side comparison of the Charge 5 and its predecessor, the Charge 3, revealed a distinct improvement in audio quality. While I hold a fondness for my Charge 3, its sound quality tends to be muddled. The Charge 3’s built-in “bass boost” feature somewhat alleviates this issue, but it struggles to handle background noise during activities like podcast or audiobook listening. In contrast, the Charge 5 delivers crystal-clear sound, maintaining clarity even at maximum volume.

The Charge 5 outperforms the Charge 3 in terms of Bluetooth connectivity, demonstrating minimal distortion and signal loss even when positioned at a distance. Both models share the same charging time and battery life, with a four-hour charge time and a 20-hour battery life (volume-dependent). Both also offer power bank functionality, allowing device charging on the go.

Caveats and Concerns

While the Charge 5 boasts several commendable features, there are notable aspects that may raise concerns. The omission of the 3.5mm audio jack input is a drawback, limiting connectivity options and complicating the linking of different models within the Charge series. The introduction of “PartyBoost” in the Charge 5, replacing the “JBL Connect” feature in the Charge 3, poses challenges in connecting different versions for a multi-speaker experience. The absence of an audio jack further complicates this workaround.

A potential issue highlighted in user reviews involves the updated rubber feet on the Charge 5’s base. Some users reported the rubber stripes peeling off within months of use. Considering the premium price of the Charge 5, this raises concerns about long-term durability.

Is the JBL Charge 5 Worth the Investment?

Despite these drawbacks, the JBL Charge 5 emerges as a worthwhile investment, with a few considerations. It positions itself at the higher end of the Bluetooth speaker market. However, for users seeking a reliable speaker capable of withstanding outdoor adventures, the Charge 5 justifies the investment. Its enhanced sound quality, extended battery life, and durability make it stand out among its competitors. The power bank functionality adds a distinctive feature, catering to users on the move.

While the Charge 5 may not be the most budget-friendly option, especially for less demanding scenarios, it excels in performance and longevity. If you prioritize durability, sound quality, and power bank capabilities, the JBL Charge 5 is a compelling choice. However, for more passive outdoor activities where these features are less crucial, alternative options may offer a more budget-friendly solution. Ultimately, the JBL Charge 5 earns its worth for those seeking a speaker that delivers both performance and longevity.
