IMEI Number: If you buy a smartphone or mobile phone, you probably know that it has an IMEI number. IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. But do you understand what it means and why it is important? If not, definitely understand. IMEI is a unique 15-digit number used to identify mobile phones and some satellite phones.
Why is it used?
IMEI serves as an identifier for individual devices, just as serial numbers distinguish different products. IMEI numbers are used by mobile networks to authenticate and track devices if they are lost or stolen. It is an important tool in maintaining the security and integrity of mobile communication networks.
This way you can know the IMEI number
You can dial *#06# on your phone’s keypad and you will see the IMEI number (How to Find IMEI Number) on the screen. On most smartphones you can find the IMEI number in the device’s settings. Go to Settings then find About Phone and IME or IME Info. Also, some older phones may have the IMEI number printed inside the battery compartment or on the back cover of the device.
Do not share with anyone
If you have your phone’s original packaging, the IMEI number is usually printed on a label or barcode. It is important to keep your IMEI number safe and not share it with unknown or untrusted sources. Because, if it falls into the wrong hands, it can be used for nefarious activities.
Many smartphones in India are going to change their IMEI number soon. The government has announced that from January 1, 2023, it will be mandatory to register the IMEI of all mobile phones before sale in India. This registration will be done on the country’s anti-copy and lost handset blocking portal. Once the rules are fully implemented, it will be necessary to obtain an IMEI certificate from the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction portal operated by the Department of Telecommunications.
Every smartphone comes with a unique 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. IMEI works as a unique ID of the device. Actually tracking a lost mobile phone is difficult due to fake devices with same IMEI on telecom network. Due to which the government has announced this new rule.
