If you use an Android phone, you have to use a third party app to record calls.
You download cube call recorder or any other app in your phone.
Now open the app and go to WhatsApp. Now call the person whose call you want to record.
If you see the Cube Call widget in the app, your call is being recorded.
If for some reason the phone shows an error, you have to open the app again.
Now go to app settings, here click on force voice in voice call.

This is how recording will be done in iPhone –

If you are an iPhone user, you can record calls using Mac.
For this, you need to connect your iPhone to Mac via Lightning cable.
Now you will see ‘Trust this computer’ written in your computer which you have to click on.
If you are connecting phone to Mac for the first time, you need to go to quick time option.
