The MotoGP race debut in India is undergoing significant adjustments in response to the relentless and oppressive heat experienced at the Buddh International Circuit.

Organizers have decided to reduce the length of the race by three laps, following concerns raised by riders about the “horrible” conditions.

India’s MotoGP Debut

India is currently playing host to the 13th race out of the 20 in this MotoGP season at the Buddh track, situated on the outskirts of New Delhi. This circuit, which was formerly the venue for Formula One races for three consecutive seasons until 2013, is now the focal point of MotoGP in India.

Riders’ Concerns

Highly regarded riders, including the reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia, expressed their dismay at the conditions following the practice sessions on Friday. Bagnaia, representing Ducati, candidly stated, “You feel your throat burning on the back straight. Your throat is burning, your legs are burning.” His sentiments were echoed by Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez, who remarked, “It’s horrible. Sorry, but it’s horrible. You cannot imagine on the bike.” Fernandez further emphasized the challenges, stating that it would be “difficult to manage” the race under these conditions. Nonetheless, he underlined the professionalism of the riders, asserting that they must focus on performing to their fullest.

Race Adjustment

In response to the riders’ concerns and the sweltering weather, race organizers have decided to modify the race distances. A statement from MotoGP clarified the adjustments, stating that the Sprint, Moto2, and Moto3 races would each be shortened by one lap, while the MotoGP Grand Prix itself would see a reduction of three laps, going from 24 laps to 21 laps. These changes have been implemented in collaboration with official tire suppliers.

Safety Concerns

In addition to the heat, concerns have been raised regarding the safety of the Buddh circuit. Particular apprehensions were expressed about the proximity of the walls to the asphalt. Safety remains a top priority for the riders and organizers.

Weather Conditions

As of Saturday morning, the temperature in Greater Noida soared to 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 degrees Fahrenheit). During their free practice session, riders were seen replenishing their fluids, indicating the physically demanding nature of the conditions. The temperature was expected to rise further in the afternoon.

Fastest Lap

Despite the challenging conditions, Italy’s Luca Marini emerged as the fastest rider in Friday’s second practice session. Marini completed a dramatic final lap in just one minute and 44.782 seconds, a mere 0.008 seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.

In conclusion, the inaugural MotoGP race in India is witnessing modifications to address the severe heat conditions. Rider safety and comfort are paramount, leading to the adjustment of race lengths. As the event progresses, all eyes will be on the riders as they navigate the challenging conditions at the Buddh International Circuit.
