International Plastic Bag Free Day is celebrated every year on July 3 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment. On this day people are encouraged to use sustainable alternatives like jute or cotton bags as an alternative to plastic bags. Last year on 5th June 2022 “World Environment Day”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a pledge to phase out single use plastic. Subsequently, a notification was issued by the Ministry of Forest Environment and Climate (Climate Change), Government of India banning single-use plastics from 1 July 2022. Also the maximum thickness of plastic items and carry bags was fixed.

Pursuant to these rules, 1509 kg plastic quantity was seized by Nadiad Municipality in just four months through effective operation and under that a fine of 18 thousand 900 rupees was also collected from the shopkeepers. Nadiad Municipality has requested the public to use biodegradable plastic so as to reduce the damage to the environment and to contribute to save the environment.

A joint effort of Gujarat Pollution Control Board and Nadiad Municipality at Nadiad in Kheda district has conducted several seminars to make people aware of plastic bags. Traders are advised not to buy plastic bags by going to their shops and are informed about the harm caused by plastic to the body. It is worth mentioning that as per the amendment of Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, 4(2) production, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single use plastic (SUP) has been banned as per the rule of 1 July 2022. Also polystyrene and plastics used in commodities have been banned.

Banned plastics include earbirds made with plastic sticks, plastic sticks with balloons, candy sticks, plastic spoons for eating ice cream, etc. Low quality plastic items have been banned by the central government. While the Plastic Waste Management Rule-2016 was carried by amending 4(1) C
