The weir cum causeway constructed by the Surat Municipal Corporation over Tapi River has overflowed with the onset of rains. Although it has been closed to vehicular traffic by the corporation, shocking videos have surfaced of some youths taking a bath.

Cause–The youth had fun on the way
The causeway has been closed for vehicular movement by the corporation as it has overflowed. As soon as the overflow occurs, the corporation has seriously stopped the vehicular movement before any mishap, but the scenes that have come to light today are very surprising. In the video, it is clear that some youths had to bathe on the overflowed causeway. Looking at the way the water flow is seen, if any of the youths get drowned in the water, they can die, but these youths are engrossed in fun as if they are not afraid of anyone.

When the causeway is closed for vehicular traffic, other people can only watch it from a distance, so sometimes people go there to watch. People reach to stand on the embankment to see the water level of the river Tapi and the causeway overflowing, but people are not allowed there even when the river Tapi has taken a more violent form. Even though the causeway was overflowing in such a situation, how did these youths reach there? And started swimming there at the risk of life is the subject of investigation. Incidents of death due to youth drowning in the causeway also keep coming up from time to time. It is also raining in Surat city and upstream also due to rise in water level of Tapi river due to rain, causeway overflow level is also increasing. In such a situation, if any of the youths who are having fun at the risk of their lives in the rushing water gets stuck in the water, they may even die. Corporation needs to take this matter seriously. Special care must be taken to ensure that such youths are not allowed to reach the causeway.

Water flooded low-lying areas and roads
Due to torrential rain in Surat city since early morning, its effect is starting to be felt gradually. Scenes of inundation have come to light in some societies of Kataragam, Dabholi, Swami Vivekananda Circle, Kadarshani Nala and Palanpur area. Especially in the lower areas, the vehicle drivers are facing a lot of trouble as the water is flowing on the road as well.

The corporation team got to work
Knee-deep water is filling in some areas due to rain. Teams from different zones of the corporation have gone to the area where the waterlogging is taking place and started opening the manhole covers. In particular, efforts have been made to go to the road where more than one foot of water is visible and open the lid to drain the water quickly. It is still raining in the city, due to which the water level may rise. Keeping this in mind, the Corporation has started operations in different zones.
