An old man’s body was found on the first floor of his house in Tarapur near Anand. There were five to six deep knife wounds on the neck. The whole room was soaked in blood. There also appeared to be a scuffle before the murder. After all, what happened to a 75-year-old man to kill him so brutally? To get the answer to this question and to reach the killer, the police started investigation. In which the yellow T-shirt of the accused of murder made the police successful in solving the case.

The police inspected the spot as the first step in the investigation and thereafter began a round of questioning of the family of the deceased Sanjaybhai (deceased’s name changed). The family informed the police that Sanjaybhai’s wife had died 25 years ago. He then ran a shop in Tarapur selling items like iron beds and plastic barrels. There was no rift or fight with anyone. There was no reason for deadly enmity. The old man had his shop on the ground floor where he was killed. Store goods were kept on the first floor. Someone had buried the old man in this place.

The brother of the deceased told the police that Sanjay Bhai’s shop is located near my shop. On the day of the murder, at 10 o’clock in the morning, I and my brother were sitting in my shop. After that Sanjaybhai left my shop at 1 pm. After some time Sanjaybhai’s son i.e. my nephew returned from nearby Bandhani village. He sat in the shop for a while without looking at his father. After that he came to my shop. He told me, uncle my father is not at home and locked. Then he would have checked a couple of places to find the father. In a few minutes he came running back and told me, uncle I went upstairs to the shop to look for my father, and there he was found bleeding. His throat has been cut.’

‘Then me and my nephew rushed to the spot. It was seen that someone had stabbed him in the neck. When we called 108, my brother was declared dead by the 108 staff.’

PI Jigar Patel of Tarapur Police Station said, ‘When we came to know about this incident, the first question that came to us was that why would someone kill a 77-year-old? We looked at different angles in this case. Why is there a robbery with the deceased? He also used to give money on interest, has there been a clash with anyone? That was also the angle of investigation. To find the accused, we formed two teams of local crime branch, two teams of special operation group and three teams of Tarapur police.

The police have now started the second phase of the investigation and started checking CCTV cameras in the vicinity. As the police estimated the probable period of the murder of the old man, the CCTV of that time began to be checked. Found footage of two places in total. PI Jigar Patel said, ‘There is a dairy near where the murder took place. We got CCTV footage from there. After that, there is a hospital nearby, we checked the CCTV of that too.’

The police noted that it was raining heavily in Tarapur during the period when the murder might have taken place. So there was movement of single people on the road. This was a good thing for the police in terms of solving the crime. But at the time of murder, the possibility that the killer could have washed the blood-stained clothes of the deceased in the rain, also came to the attention of the police. Due to which it was also felt that there would be difficulty in the investigation. Police proceeded with the investigation considering both these possibilities.

A yellow T-shirt directed the police
The PI said, ‘The CCTV footage showed a suspicious youth coming. After a few minutes it is seen leaving. When this young man came, he was carrying a bag and wearing a yellow T-shirt. A few minutes later the same young man is seen taking off his T-shirt and leaving with the T-shirt wrapped in his hand. Both these CCTV footages were from the period of the incident. Meanwhile, no one else is seen passing by. Based on the footage, we started questioning people to find out who this person is.’

More than 50 people could not identify the suspect
“To nab the accused, we started questioning around 50 people living in the surrounding area. But many people could not recognize him as the CCTV did not show a clear face. Eventually, the SOG constable was tipped off by an informant that the youth seen in the CCTV could be Govind Yadav, a resident of Gayatrinagar.’

When the police reached Gayatrinagar, it was revealed that this Govind was staying at the house of his sister and Banvi. He informed the police that, ‘We are originally from Uttar Pradesh. Govind had given his 12th standard exam and came to Tarapur only 4 months ago. Now he has gone back to Uttar Pradesh to take college admission.’ Now the question arose in the mind of the police that why 18-year-old Govind of Uttar Pradesh could kill a 77-year-old man living in Tarapur? The police immediately informed the Uttar Pradesh Police and identified the accused Govind and asked him to be cordoned off. A SOG team then reached Uttar Pradesh and nabbed Govind, starting his interrogation.

How did the accused Govind come in contact with the old man?
Govind broke down when he saw the police arriving in Uttar Pradesh from Tarapur near Anand. Regarding the information given to the police by the accused Govind Yadav, PI Jigar Patel said, ‘The accused is a resident of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh. Govind’s sister is married in Anand’s Tarapur and has been living in Tarapur for 10 years. Govindana Banevi works as a mason. Govind had come to Tarapur from Uttar Pradesh 4 months ago to his sister’s house in search of work. So can collect some money. After coming to Tarapur, he was doing color work for a month. After a while he fell ill and was bitten by a snake, so he stopped going to work. A person named Chiku Maheshwari lived opposite the house where Govindana lived. One day Chiku Maheshwari bought a cot from Sanjaybhai’s shop. Chiku Maheshwari asked Govind’s help to pick him up on the bike and both went to the shop. In this way Sanjaybhai and Govind came in contact for the first time around June 12. At that time, Sanjaybhai moved his hand under Govind’s waist and said, you come and meet me later. Sanjaybhai’s shop was 500 meters away from the house where Govind lived.’

Four days after the murder, Govind Yadav had reached Uttar Pradesh and from there he was searching the internet for information about the investigation into the murder case.

Police said, ‘Govind reached Sanjaybhai’s shop two days after this incident. Both people had a long conversation there. Then Sanjaybhai took Govind’s hand to where his two-storey house is located behind the shop. He had a physical relationship with Govind. In this way both became closer to each other.’

Due to this, Govind hatched a conspiracy
‘During the period of 14 days, relationships were formed several times with Govind and Sanjaybhai. Govind once failed his 12th standard exam in UP, so he took the exam again. Which resulted and he passed the exam. Now he had to go back to Uttar Pradesh and take admission in the college. So he demanded money from Sanjaybhai, but the old man refused to give money. Govind felt that he refused to give money. It occurred to him that I am fulfilling the needs of this old man, but he does not give me money. They simply use. Thinking like this he hatched a conspiracy in his mind.’

The police have also seized the old man's gold chain from the accused. The accused also sent pictures to some people in Uttar Pradesh to sell this chain.

What was the sequence of events on the day of the murder?
‘Govind thought that the old man was wearing a gold chain around his neck, I should rob it and run away. So as part of this plan, Govind left his sister’s house on June 26 around 11 o’clock, saying that he was going to get fruit salad. First he went to Tarapur market and bought a parcel of fruit salad. After that, to carry out his plan, he went a little further to a merchant selling paddles and asked him to give him a good, sharp knife. Govind said that if I settle my plan and take home a fruit salad, no one will know. He put the knife in a bag with fruit salad and reached Sanjaybhai’s shop.’

‘After reaching the shop, Govind had a few conversations with Sanjaybhai and then both of them reached the second floor of his house behind the shop as before.’

He removed the blood-stained T-shirt and wrapped it in his hand
Govind told the police about the murder, ‘I saw an opportunity and took out a knife from a bag of fruit salad and inflicted a wound on the old man’s neck. So immediately resisting, he pushed me with both hands and threw me down. But he was injured and could not get up from the ground due to his age. But he started shouting for rescue. But I sat with both my legs on the old man’s stomach and inflicted 5 to 6 more stab wounds. Because of this, the T-shirt I was wearing also had blood on it. So I took off the t-shirt and wrapped it in my hand and left the gold thread in my pocket. After that, instead of the main road, I reached my sister’s house by an inner road. Because there is less traffic on this road. I met a few people on the way. It was pouring rain at that time. Also threw a bag of fruit salad on the way.

The bloody t-shirt was washed so that no one would find out. Then the t-shirt and slippers were also thrown away where no one could see them. When Govind came home, his sister asked, why are you in such a condition? where is your t-shirt So Govind told his sister that it is raining a lot outside. I was soaked. Govind soon came to know that a murder complaint had been registered, so he made a plan to leave Gujarat.’

‘He said to his sister and wife, I have to go to Uttar Pradesh because I want to take admission in college. Earlier he went to Anand railway station by bus and from there he reached Uttar Pradesh by train on June 30. Her mother, father, brother, sister-in-law live there. He did not inform anyone at home.
