Due to the heavy rain in Ahmedabad on Saturday, the entire city became waterlogged, water was filled everywhere and the water in the drains was not being discharged quickly. The cleaning operation was not done properly and systematically by the solid waste management department of the municipal corporation system, which resulted in waste on drains and catchpits, pap2 cups, banned plastic furs were frozen. Due to the garbage on the catch pits, the water could not be discharged quickly into the drains.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner CR Kharsan and CT Engineer Harpalsingh Jhala said that due to the rains in the city, drains and catch pits were opened by the corporation employees at various places and water disposal was done. The intensity of the rain and the simultaneous rainfall of up to seven inches led to waterlogging in several areas. There were 9906 potholes in the city and out of them 9713 potholes have been completed and 192 potholes are in progress. There are 6 places where Bhuva works.
Due to the torrential rains in the city, one area of the city was flooded due to various reasons, the city was not cleaned properly due to which the entire garbage reached the sewer catch pits along with the water, and the water pumps were not able to function when the garbage was reaching the pumping station in the strong water line inside the sewer. Due to construction of only 2500 km of ‘water to wall’ roads, low capacity storm water drainage and 930 km of storm water drainage network etc., some areas of the city did not receive rain water even after 48 hours. Newly annexed areas like Bhopal, Vastral, lack of systematic drainage, storm water drainage were getting waterlogged for longer time.
Further, regarding maintaining the Sabarmati level, he said that reduction measures are taken when rain is forecast in the city. The level is maintained but when it rains and depending on its intensity the level of the river is lowered if the intensity of rain increases to drain the water from the city and the level of the river is also taken up to 128 feet. Only if it is 131 feet, the villages including Sanand and Dholka Bavla can be given the water required for paddy cultivation to maintain that level but when rain is forecast, the irrigation department and the municipal corporation work together and coordinate the system.
