GST was implemented across India on July 1, 2017. After that, GST was imposed on every commodity, some of which were drastically changed in the slabs. ‘Bhaskar’ calculated how much GST tax a typical family with a couple and two children currently pays to the government, in which by calculating the necessities of life per typical family, it is understood that a typical family pays more than one thousand rupees in GST tax per month.

GST was implemented from July 1, 2017 to simplify the process of Goods and Services Tax (GST) taxation and make one nation, one tax across the country. Under the GST system, goods and services i.e. goods and services were placed in slabs of 5 percent, 12 percent, 18 percent and 28 percent depending on their category. However, slabs of 5, 12 and 18 per cent have been placed on generally essential and highly useful items. However, all these are calculated and a typical family of an average middle class person whose monthly income is around Rs 25 to 30 thousand pays more than one thousand per month in GST tax to the government.

From the time one wakes up in the morning to the time one goes to sleep at night, one uses daily necessities from toothpaste to mosquito coils at night. In which approximately 38 essential items are needed. There is a tax levied by the government ranging from 5 to 12 and 18 percent. Thus, if we count a family with a husband and wife and their two school-going children, the monthly average consumption of essential items is seven to eight thousand, in which it has been revealed that the family is paying more than one thousand in GST tax alone.

The possibility of tax reduction on essential items (heading) has undergone several changes after the implementation of GST. But now it is gradually improving. So far, the government has taken strict action regarding bogus billing and several scams in GST. At present the revenue from GST is at the top. In India too, the possibility that the tax will be reduced or not collected in the future cannot be ruled out as the revenue of the government will increase. – Premal Shah, Tax Consultant.
