Zahira Sheikh demanded in the Supreme Court that the case should be tried not in Gujarat, but in another state. Thereafter, on April 12, 2004, the Supreme Court transferred the case to Mumbai and ordered a fresh trial. Nine accused in the Best Bakery case were convicted on February 24, 2006, while eight were acquitted, following a trial in a Mumbai court from October 4, 2004. All 9 convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment. In this case, 4 absconding accused were caught in the year 2013.
