Khushbu Kanubhai Rabari, a 20-year-old girl living in Vanchhara village of Padra taluk of Vadodara district, died after being bitten by a cobra. The villagers informed the Wildlife Rescue Trust. So the worker of the trust went to the village and rescued the cobra snake after 3 hours of hard work.

Death within one and a half hours of cobra bite
With the onset of monsoon season, reptiles have started emerging in Vadodara city and surrounding areas. Khushbu Kanubhai Vanchhara, a resident of Vanchhara village of Padra taluka, went to collect fodder and cow dung near the house around 5 pm yesterday. At this time, Khushbu was bitten by a cobra snake. He died within an hour and a half as he was not taken to the hospital on time.

A 3.5 feet cobra was rescued
Rakesh Jadav, a member of the Wild Life Rescue Trust, said that around 2 pm today, I received a call from Chandrakantbhai from Vanchhara village. So I reached Vanachhara village and rescued the cobra after a heavy search. The croba snake was 3.5 feet long and was rescued and handed over to the Padra Forest Department.

Reptiles have adapted to the climate of Vadodara
Vishwamitri river and green belt provide good environment for reptiles. There is no density along our river banks. The climate of Vadodara is more favorable to reptiles than Ahmedabad and Surat. About 20 percent of the snakes in Vadodara are poisonous, while about 80 percent are found to be non-venomous. Most snakes come out in monsoons. Then it is seen in summer and in winter the snakes go on a rampage.

Arvind Pawar of the Wild Life Rescue Trust said that the population of reptiles in Gujarat is the highest in Vadodara. When bitten by a snake, people go to Bhuva. When bitten by poisonous snakes including cobras, I appeal to take the patient to the hospital instead of taking them to the vet.

He said that people say that we get a lot of snakes there but the fact is that we have gone to live in a snake area, so now snakes are caught in residential areas. If you catch a snake, you inform us. We will rescue the snake and take it away.

12 lakh people died due to snake bites in the country in 20 years
Around 54 lakh people are bitten by snakes worldwide every year, of which 81,000 to 1.37 lakh die. More than 50 out of 100 cases of snakebites in the world occur in India alone. According to information from Mumbai-based ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, approximately 12 lakh people died due to snake bites in India between 2000 and 2019, i.e. in a period of 20 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers snakebite as a high-priority neglected tropical disease in the country.
