The upcoming season 2 of The Last of Us has cast Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Abby, a character previously met with divisive opinions from fans.

HBO confirmed the news via Twitter, marking a significant addition to the cast of the post-apocalyptic series. While Dever was initially considered for the role of Ellie in season 1, the part eventually went to Bella Ramsey. The casting decision comes after fans lobbied for Dever due to her resemblance to the in-game Ellie and her connection to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4. The series creators, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, expressed their excitement about having Dever join the cast, emphasizing the importance of talent in the selection process.

Abby Anderson, portrayed by Laura Bailey in “The Last of Us Part II,” is a character known for sparking controversy and receiving backlash due to her actions in the game and body-shaming comments related to her muscular physique. Considering the heated responses to Abby in the gaming community, it remains to be seen how Dever will navigate the discourse around the character.

In a statement, Druckmann and Mazin highlighted the consistency in their casting approach, seeking world-class actors who capture the essence of the source material. They welcomed Kaitlyn Dever to the “Last of Us” family, which already includes Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.

Dever, recognized for her roles in Emmy-nominated “Dopesick” and the Hulu film “No One Will Save You,” has previously played a silent protagonist. Her portrayal of Abby in the upcoming season, which adapts events from “The Last of Us Part II,” is expected to feature a crucial scene with Pedro Pascal’s Joel, impacting the storyline significantly.

Filming for the second season faced delays due to the Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike, but the series was greenlit after only two episodes of the first season. The creators plan to expand the narrative, incorporating new characters and multiple seasons to fully explore the expansive source material.

“The Last of Us” season 1 recently earned eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, adding anticipation for the upcoming season. With filming set to begin in the American Spring, fans can expect the second season to premiere on HBO in 2025.

As the gaming world reacts to the casting news, the series continues to generate significant interest and discussion, setting the stage for another intense and emotionally charged season in the “Last of Us” universe.

The eagerly awaited second season of “The Last of Us” has cast Kaitlyn Dever in the pivotal role of Abby, a character that garnered mixed reactions from fans in the gaming community. HBO officially confirmed the casting, acknowledging Dever’s significant addition to the post-apocalyptic series. Initially considered for the role of Ellie in the first season, Dever’s connection to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 and her resemblance to the in-game Ellie led fans to lobby for her casting. The creators, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, emphasized the importance of talent in their casting decisions and expressed enthusiasm about Dever joining the “Last of Us” family. As the series ventures into uncharted territory with new characters and adaptations from “The Last of Us Part II,” Dever’s portrayal of Abby is poised to bring fresh dynamics to the emotionally charged storyline.
