Netflix has recently announced its decision to introduce restrictions on account and password sharing in India, mirroring similar measures taken earlier in the United States. Starting July 20, the streaming service will send out emails to users utilizing the same Netflix account across different households, emphasizing that a single account should only be used within a single household.

This shift in policy marks a departure from the relatively flexible environment Indian users have enjoyed, allowing them to share a single Netflix account across multiple households, such as among groups of friends or relatives. The new restrictions will initially complicate usage for these users, introducing additional steps and potentially altering the dynamics of shared subscriptions.

How will Netflix enforce these restrictions on account and password sharing? Users outside the primary household will face increased complexity, requiring them to enter verification codes for access, valid for up to seven days. Alternatively, they must connect to a Wi-Fi network in their primary location at least once every 31 days.

Netflix assures users that it understands the need for flexibility, especially during travel. The company verifies devices within a household by tracking IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from devices signed into the Netflix account.

As part of these changes, users in India are encouraged to transfer their existing profiles to new paid memberships. While Netflix introduced paid sharing options in various regions in May, it remains unclear if new sharing options related to paid plans will be made available to Indian users.

In India, Netflix subscription plans start at Rs. 149 per month for the Mobile plan, designed for portable devices. The Premium plan, priced at Rs. 649 per month, offers access to Ultra-HD content on up to four devices simultaneously across various platforms, including mobiles, televisions, computers, and streaming devices. Importantly, Netflix accounts can have multiple user profiles on any plan, with restrictions limited to simultaneous device usage.

This significant move by Netflix indicates a strategic shift in its approach to account sharing, aiming to streamline user access and potentially boost revenue in the Indian market.
