In 2021, Disney Plus made a resounding Marvel Studios comeback with the groundbreaking series “WandaVision.” This introduction to a world that had been nearly a year into quarantine quickly became a social media sensation. It was a unique blend of Kelce/Swift charisma infused with superpowers, led by the talented Elizabeth Olsen.
Following “WandaVision,” the summer of 2021 saw the arrival of “Loki,” a series that dared to surpass the already high bar set by its predecessor. Starring Tom Hiddleston, whose portrayal of the key villain turned anti-hero had endeared him to comic book aficionados, “Loki” solidified his status as an indispensable component of the Marvel Studios machine.
“Loki” was not merely a rehash of the mischievous antics of the God of Mischief. Instead, it transcended the character’s Asgardian royalty and arrogance, plunging him into a realm of higher stakes: the control of time itself. The first season of “Loki” stood out precisely because it defied expectations and reinvigorated a character that had been part of Marvel’s glory days. This new Loki exhibited a conscience, a transformation so profound that not even Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark had experienced a similar reinvention within the MCU. Paired with the consistently humorous Owen Wilson, Loki’s role as a time cop made for compelling television.
Now, “Loki” is back for a second season, scheduled to stream on October 5. Based on the initial four episodes made available to critics, it promises to be the best original Marvel Studios content on Disney Plus since the first season of “Loki.”
In a series where time is a central theme, the return of “Loki” couldn’t be timelier. Although the MCU isn’t under direct assault, it’s no longer immune to criticism, with claims of superhero fatigue continuing to linger. The impending arrival of James Gunn’s new Superman and the DC Studios presents a looming threat. Marvel Studios’ dominance, for the first time, appears to be up for grabs, making Hiddleston’s return all the more significant.
This new season of “Loki” seems poised to remedy whatever ails the MCU. It offers a prime viewing experience that blends Hiddleston’s heroic and villainous sides. While Loki’s evil inclinations have been subdued, they still lurk beneath the surface, waiting to emerge when provoked.
Owen Wilson’s portrayal of Agent Mobius remains a surprising and perfect fit for the MCU. His character’s discovery of a hidden past adds depth to his role as a time cop, making viewers eager to learn more about his true identity.
Sophia Di Martino reprises her role as Sylvie, a variant of Loki, whose actions at the end of the previous season unleashed a multiverse of variants. Jonathan Majors, known for his portrayal of He Who Remains, returns as Victor Timely, a character who could potentially be a reflection of Kang the Conqueror, an iconic Avengers villain. The mystery surrounding Majors’ future as Kang adds intrigue to the series, given his recent legal troubles.
“Loki” was always intended to serve as a bridge to the next major Avengers movie, with Majors’ involvement playing a pivotal role in this journey. While questions surround his future as Kang, for now, he remains an active part of “Loki.”
Season 2 of “Loki” is a triumphant return to the Marvel Studios formula that fans have come to expect. While Hiddleston can’t carry the entire burden of Marvel Studios forever, there’s no harm in letting him save the day for now.
