A Real-Life Love Story: Rob McClure and Maggie Lakis in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Musical

Spread the love

In the enchanting world of theater, where fiction often mirrors reality, the love story of Rob McClure and Maggie Lakis takes center stage.

As a real-life couple, they have embarked on a unique journey, portraying the ups and downs of marriage in the “Mrs. Doubtfire” musical. In this article, we’ll explore their remarkable bond, their roles in the musical, and the revival of “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

The Love Behind the Scenes

Rob McClure and Maggie Lakis share not only their lives but also the spotlight as actors. Their enduring love story began 14 years ago and has blossomed over the years. Today, they stand strong as a couple, even while facing the unique challenge of getting “divorced” eight times a week on stage.

A Tale of Two Characters

In the “Mrs. Doubtfire” musical, Rob McClure takes on the role of Daniel, a struggling actor who, amidst a painful separation from his wife, poses as a geriatric Scottish nanny to spend more time with his children. Maggie Lakis portrays Miranda, Daniel’s estranged wife, who has grown weary of his immature behavior. As the couple’s on-stage relationship unravels, it is their real-life connection that forms the bedrock of their performances.

Love and Chemistry

When asked about the experience of playing opposite her husband, Maggie Lakis remarks, “Someone asked me, ‘Oh, is it fun to yell at your husband?’ It’s actually just not an issue. He’s so lovely and wonderful and giving and such a dynamic and present performer that I just love working with him. So even those scenes, I just feel like we can go there together.”

Rob McClure adds, “It will feel like two people who’ve been together a very long time and who have built a family together. Hopefully, we can convince the audience that we are these people going through this tumultuous moment.”

From Broadway to the Road

“Mrs. Doubtfire” had a challenging journey before finding its current success. After a short-lived run on Broadway, the musical hit the road with a revised version. Rob McClure, who originated the roles of Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire on Broadway, felt a deep connection to the show and eagerly joined the nationwide tour. Maggie Lakis, new to the musical, embraced the role of Miranda, bringing her own unique energy to the production.

A Couple on and off the Stage

Rob McClure and Maggie Lakis have a history of sharing the stage, having previously performed together in various productions. However, “Mrs. Doubtfire” marks a special milestone as they tour as parents with their 4-year-old daughter, Sadie, joining them on this coast-to-coast adventure before starting kindergarten.

While traveling with a young child presents its challenges, the couple has found ways to balance their roles as actors and parents. The production even helped them secure a nanny, and the young actors playing their on-stage children have made Sadie feel right at home with the touring company.

The Joy of Watching Each Other Shine

As they take the stage together once again, Rob McClure and Maggie Lakis rediscover the magic of performing side by side. Whether it’s McClure’s comedic talents or Lakis’s heartwarming singing, “Mrs. Doubtfire” provides a platform for both actors to witness the brilliance of their partner’s craft.

Rob McClure reflects, “When you’re married to someone, you might forget their superpowers. You just get into the day-to-day of, you know, making breakfast for your 4-year-old. It’s nice to have a daily reminder of what makes your partner so extraordinary.”
