Web3 and the Metaverse: Exploring the Future of Online Interaction
The landscape of the internet is evolving with the advent of Web3, promising to reshape the way we engage with the digital realm. Nevertheless, amidst the excitement, there are critics who cast a discerning eye on the metaverse. Even dedicated gamers have expressed skepticism, with comparisons drawn between the graphics of Mark Zuckerberg’s Horizon World and those of popular Web2 games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. Elon Musk himself has labeled the metaverse as a “buzzy word” and questioned the feasibility of constantly wearing headsets to exist in an alternate universe.
On the flip side, 38% of Gen Z individuals believe that the metaverse is the next big thing, destined to become an integral part of our lives in the coming decade. Notably, Web3 metaverse projects continue to attract considerable attention, even in the midst of a cryptocurrency market slowdown.
The pivotal question remains: does the metaverse offer genuine futuristic value? Both critics and proponents present valid arguments. Yet, recent developments suggest that we may soon experience immersive living and interaction within a virtual realm. This vision could be realized through the convergence of cutting-edge technologies, including Web3, Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR).
As alluded to earlier, Web3 and the metaverse, in particular, are laying the foundation for what Tony Tran, the founder and CEO of Peer, terms the “ambient Web.” This novel realm will enable the mapping of data onto the physical world while incorporating the dimension of time. Tran explains, “Everything in the physical world can be boiled down to Matter, Space, and Time. Web1 provided us with matter through data. Web2 gave us space through maps. Web3 bestows upon us time through blockchain. The amalgamation of these elements forms an ambient web where data is linked to the physical world with temporal attributes.”
Peer’s Web3 social media application exemplifies this concept by utilizing AR and blockchain to enhance digital interactions. It empowers users to map time-stamped events and locations onto the ‘physical world,’ creating a personalized metaverse that others can explore. This metaverse also permits the owner to revisit these moments at a later date, effectively reliving the experience.
Beyond social media, the metaverse is transforming the landscape of digital ownership through Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and marketplaces. The crypto sub-niche dedicated to NFTs is now one of the most active and well-funded sectors, with substantial investments pouring in. In fact, a recent report by DApp Radar disclosed that a staggering $297 million was allocated to blockchain gaming projects in July 2023 alone.
What’s particularly intriguing is the emergence of virtual land ownership within the metaverse. This enables individuals to own digital land parcels, develop them, and host events. A prime example is Snoop Dogg’s digital land parcel in The Sandbox metaverse, known as Snoopverse. Several Hollywood celebrities are embracing this trend to enhance fan engagement or offer virtual tours of their digital domains. Paris Hilton’s Paris World metaverse, hosted on Roblox, allows fans to explore her Beverly Hills mansion, an experience that would be otherwise inaccessible to most people.
Paris Hilton encapsulates the metaverse’s potential, saying, “For me, the metaverse is somewhere that you can do everything you can do in real life in the digital world.”
In conclusion, while the metaverse is still in its early stages of development, it’s important to note that the internet itself debuted in the early 1980s and continues to evolve. Similarly, the metaverse will likely undergo several phases of innovation before mass-adoptable products emerge. Simultaneously, educating today’s internet users about the profound impact of the metaverse on social interactions will be crucial.
