UPI: India’s UPI Boomed Abroad, After France, Now Unified Payment Interface Will Enter These Countries

Ritesh Shukla, Chief Executive Officer of NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), a subsidiary of NPCI, informed that UPI is now going to enter many Gulf countries and North American countries. He said that after successfully entering the markets of France and Singapore, we will soon be able to enter many countries in North America and the Gulf countries, though he did not give information about the exact timing of its launch.

NRI The needs of Indians will be taken care of

Speaking to Moneycontrol, Ritesh Shukla also said that the government is focusing more on launching UPI in countries where Indians travel the most. Significantly, a large number of people from India go to Gulf and North American countries every year. In such a situation, launching UPI in these places will benefit Indians the most. It may be noted that NIPL was established in April 2020. It was intended to take the Unified Payments Interface and RuPay out of India.

Working together with different countries

CEO Ritesh Shukla further said that we are working with various countries to expand the service of UPI abroad. NIPL is engaged in developing infrastructure for UPI in several countries. At the same time, interoperable systems are being developed in many countries. Cross-border UPI was launched by Singapore on 21 February 2023.

After this, the government launched the UPI facility for foreign tourists and NRIs at the G20 summit. On July 14, PM Modi announced that Indian tourists will now be able to pay for the Eiffel Tower in Paris through UPI. Along with this, 13 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, South Korea have signed an MoU with the Government of India in this regard.
