Odisha Gujarat : It has been few days since the end of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s American tour that his echo has reached Britain i.e. United Kingdom. A gift of Rs 30 thousand crores has been given to India from British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s country. This gift is nothing but a semiconductor investment. A British company is planning to set up a semiconductor plant in the Indian state of Odisha.

Earlier, the American company Micron Technology has announced setting up a plant in Sanand, Gujarat. It may be mentioned that UK’s SRAM and the Indian branch of MRAM Group are preparing to set up a semiconductor plant in Odisha.

30 thousand crore investment

A UK-based company is planning to set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha’s Ganjam district, officials said on Saturday, according to media reports. In which it has been said that 30,000 crore rupees will be invested in the first phase. UK-based SRAM and MRAM Group’s Indian arm SRAM and MRAM Technologies and Projects India Pvt Ltd signed an MoU with the state government on March 26 to set up a semiconductor unit in the state. Company officials, led by its chairman Guruji Kumaran Swamy, visited several towns near Chhatrapur in the district and then held a meeting with the district administration in Chhatrapur on Thursday.

500 to 800 acres of land will be required

Ganjam Collector Divya Jyoti Parida has assured to provide all facilities to investors to set up units. The company needs about 500 to 800 acres of land to set up the unit. We have visited several sites including Tata Industrial Park and some private land to set up the proposed semiconductor unit,” said Debdutt Singhdev, the firm’s project director. The company’s technical team will visit the district to finalize the site.

Company officials also visited some other districts of Odisha, but apart from availability of clean water and power, they noted the basic requirements of a fabrication unit such as proximity to Gopalpur port, a dedicated industrial corridor, an airstrip and a national highway. Due to which the place near Chhatrapur was chosen.

5000 people will get direct employment

Singhdev said, the company aims to directly employ 5,000 people by setting up the unit in two years. It is about Rs. It also plans to expand the unit in subsequent phases by 2027 with an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore. The semiconductor unit will produce memory chips used in mobile phones, television sets, laptops, air conditioners and ATMs. Since the country is not self-sufficient in the production of semiconductors, it imports semiconductors worth around Rs 3 lakh crore annually from various countries.
