Tomato Price Increased: The effect of the hot weather is now being seen on the pockets of the common man as well. Tomato prices have doubled in many parts of the country during the last week. Tomato prices in the retail market increased from Rs 80 to Rs 120 per kg. On the other hand, the wholesale price of tomato has increased from Rs 30-35 per kg to Rs 65-70 per kg.

The record rise in tomato prices is due to several reasons. However, this increase is mainly due to excessive heat, delayed rains and less interest of farmers in cultivation. ET reported that tomato prices fell to Rs 3-5 per kg in May due to several factors such as high heat, late rains and lack of interest among farmers in growing the crop.

Tomato prices have doubled in the last two days

Tomato trader Ashok Ganor of Delhi’s Azadpur wholesale market said that the price of tomatoes has doubled in the last two days. The supply of tomatoes from neighboring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has dwindled. Now we are taking tomatoes from Bangalore. He said that the tomato plants on the ground were damaged during the recent rains. Due to damage in tomato, farmers have also stopped caring for this crop. In Ahmedabad too, the price of tomato has reached 80 rupees per kg.

Farmers were forced to destroy crops

Farmers stopped planting tomato fields to minimize losses from low prices. Ajay Belhekar, a farmer from Maharashtra’s Narayangaon region, said farmers did not spray pesticides or use fertilizers because the rates were not remunerative. This led to increased outbreaks of pests and diseases and reduced production. In such a situation, farmers could not recover the cost of harvesting and transporting tomatoes due to falling prices. Due to this, the farmer was forced to throw away his produce or drive a tractor over the crop to remove the crop.

Due to which the prices may decrease

It is expected that prices may come down in the coming weeks, as tomato cultivation is set to resume in many new areas. On the other hand, if there is heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh and other places, the prices may remain stable.
