Power Tariff: Consumers are going to get a big relief on the electricity consumption front in the coming days. Your electricity bill may come down in the coming days. Electricity supplied during solar hours will be available to consumers at 10 to 20 percent cheaper rates. The State Electricity Regulatory Commission considers 8 hours of the day as solar hours. During this period, called daytime, you pay less than normal rates for electricity supplied during that period.

The central government has announced two major changes in the existing power tariff system. For this the government has decided to amend the Electricity (Right of Consumer) Rules 2020. The first change concerns electricity prices during solar hours, called the Time of Day tariff system. The time-of-day tariff system will first apply to commercial and industrial customers with a maximum consumption of up to 10 kW. For them, this rule will be applicable from April 1, 2024 and for non-agricultural consumers, this provision will be applicable from April 1, 2025. The time of day tariff system will be implemented immediately for the customers for whom smart meters will be installed.

Customers will be able to change their electricity consumption patterns

Giving information about this decision of the government, Union Energy Minister R.K. Singh said that the time-of-day tariff system is in favor of consumers along with the country’s power system. He said that the time of day tariff system is divided into three categories like peak hours, solar hours and normal hours. Along with this, customers will be able to manage the load according to the tariff. Electricity will be cheaper during solar hours. However during non-solar hours such as thermal or hydro or gas based power will be more expensive than solar power. With this, consumers can change their electricity consumption patterns.

Smart meter rules were also simplified

Rules for smart meters have also been simplified. In order not to inconvenience the consumers, the existing penalty for increasing the power load beyond the maximum load has been reduced. As per the revised rules on provision of meters, after installation of a smart meter, if the smart meter records the maximum load for the period prior to the installation of the smart meter, the customer will not have to pay any penalty. Rules for load revision have also been simplified. The load will increase only after the load factor exceeds three times the fixed load in a financial year.
