Floods have become a common problem in Vadodara city every 4 to 5 years and since the Vishwamitri river passes through the city’s Sayajibagh Zoo, flood rescue operations for animals and birds prove to be a major challenge. Monsoon season has started, due to which the Sayajibagh Zoo system is now geared up to save animals and birds in case of floods.
The aviary also has exotic birds
The visionary Sir Sayajirao Gaikwad built Sayajibaug for the city dwellers. In which even today the people of the city go for a walk. Also visit the animal and bird museum at Sayajibagh. The walk-in aviary and bird house and various cages built in the museum now house new exotic birds.
5 years flood conditions are created
Pratyush Patankar, Zoo Curator, Sayajibaug Zoo, said, Sayajibaug Zoo is located on the banks of Vishwamitri and we have a problem of floods once every 5 years in Vadodara. However, we are prepared to meet the flood situation. In case of any natural calamity, all arrangements have been made to protect animals and birds from it.
Animals will be safe
He further said that in the last six years we have done redevelopment in the zoo. Two major projects have been completed by us in this zoo and these two major projects that we have built and designed new cages and new enclosures are completely flood-proof and pre-arranged in full design to allow the animals to move safely to high altitude areas. has been There are cages for carnivores, in which we have built high platforms in the night house, on which the animals can climb and stay safe even in case of flooding.
Also facility in walk in aviary
A walk-in aviary has been prepared for the birds, which was inaugurated in October 2022, he added. The complete design of this aviary has been made keeping flood conditions in mind. The bird cages are kept at a good height and height and the arrangement is such that the bird can sit on the elevated area when the water fills the bottom. Birds are provided with enough nests. They can also protect themselves from the rain by going inside.
Birds can save themselves in trees
Pratyush Patankar said, There are two large walk-in domes, which you can also see for the birds inside, on the side of the dome we had natural big trees, the trees are covered inside the dome. Naturally, when birds want to protect themselves from excessive rain in the forest, they shelter themselves inside dense trees. So in such a situation we have kept these trees and these birds which at that time live in these trees in their own way.
Flood contingency planning
They further said that the Sayajibagh zoo also has small animals. In which the rabbit and porcupine cages are in the low-lying area, we shift those animals to the high-altitude zoo office area when needed. Any new development planning we do in the zoo is done keeping in mind the flood in all areas and we are moving ahead with full planning to ensure that no major situation problem will arise regarding the flood situation in the near future.
