About 20 families were evacuated after a slab of a flat fell on the flat below in a building in Malad West, Mumbai Municipal Corporation said on Monday morning. Two people were injured in this accident. The incident took place at 3.30 am in the fourth floor flat in C Wing of Navjivan Cooperative Housing Society at Evershine Nagar. Soon after, municipal officials visited the spot on Tuesday and asked the residents to vacate the building.

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Commissioner of P North Ward, said the residents are worried and looking for a place to stay, as their building is not in the C1 category list of hazardous buildings. As many as 59 families will be evacuated from the other three wigs of the building in the next seven days, officials said.

An official of P North Ward said a notice was given to conduct a structural audit of the building but it was not carried out. “We checked the building, and it is in a dangerous condition. Now it will be audited by us. The C wing has been evacuated, and we have asked the residents of the other wings to vacate within seven days.

However, the building is in the process of going for redevelopment. The builder has assured us that he will demolish the building. Bankim Desai, who lives on the third floor, said his neighbors were injured, and that many of the residents were tenants so he did not know their names. But two people were injured in the incident due to slab falling in the building. One of the injured residents was a child, and the other was in his twenties and they were sleeping in the bedroom when the incident happened. Both of them are fine, and will be discharged soon.
