A suo moto petition was taken up by the Gujarat High Court regarding Sabarmati river pollution. Meanwhile, a central government report in the year 2022 declared the Sabarmati river as the second most polluted river in the country. Apart from this, a PIL was filed in the High Court regarding the pollution in Sabarmati river. The High Court also issued directions to AMC, GPCB and CPCB to prevent and investigate pollution in Sabarmati.
50 percent sample failure of 14 STP plants
In respect of the same case, an affidavit has been filed in the High Court by the affidavit. In which it is stated that sewage from private societies is dumped into the river. AMC and GPCB have received 500 such connections. 50 percent of treated water samples taken from 14 STP plants failed. The vigilance investigation has also revealed that the Vinzol STP plant, built at a cost of 103 crores, was not working as per the standard. The AMC fined 5.71 crores on the contractor of Vinzol STP plant, 1.25 crores on the operator for not maintaining contaminated water parameters and 44.86 lakhs on the contractor for not maintaining proper monitoring.
Ground water is also polluted by bad water
An inspection by the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner of the 180 MLD treatment plant at Pirana found that the employees were absent. Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued show-cause notices to 09 STP plants in Ahmedabad. Groundwater is also being polluted due to sewage entering the Sabarmati River.
