Tata Hospital’s center at Kharghar will be treating important cancer patients with the much-awaited proton beam treatment method from this week. Crores of rupees are spent for this treatment abroad whereas this center in Kharghar will provide the treatment at a reasonable rate. The long-awaited proton beam treatment system was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May. Tata Hospital has become the first public hospital in the country to provide this facility.
As of today cancer patients coming to Tata Hospital are treated with radiation treatment. However, due to this, other tissues are also destroyed along with the cancer tissue. Proton beam therapy only destroys cancerous tissue. Proton treatment method is known as advanced treatment.
In the proton treatment system, priority will be given to young children while 40 percent of senior citizens will be treated. Usually over 800 patients will be treated every year. Also free treatment will be given to poor patients. Three beam cameras are installed in the center for proton therapy treatment. The manager of Tata Hospital, Dr. Rajesh Badve, informed that the price of one beam camera is 30 to 40 crore rupees.
A proton treatment regimen is likely to take at least 20 minutes to treat a single patient. A radiation beam will be given to a patient for only two minutes. However, it will take about 10 to 15 minutes to determine which direction to direct the beam. After starting the treatment of the first patient, the second patient can be prepared for treatment.
Duration of treatment according to the tumor
A treatment with proton therapy, which can be viewed online, will typically last 30 to 40 days. The duration of treatment will be determined according to the tumor. Doctors will be able to see reports online of how much the tumor has shrunk with this treatment.
